Symptoms of dog mastitis:

1. Acute mastitis: Fever, depression, reduced appetite, and preference for lying down and other systemic symptoms may occur. The affected area is congested, swollen, hardened, warm, and painful. Lymph nodes above the mammary glands become enlarged, milk cannot be discharged smoothly, and lactation may decrease or stop. Initially, the milk is thin, and in the case of purulent mastitis, the milk becomes purulent with yellow clumps or blood.

2. Chronic mastitis: The systemic symptoms are not obvious, but one or more mammary glands become hardened, and watery secretions can be squeezed out even with strong pressure.

3. Cystic mastitis: More common in older dogs, the mammary glands become hardened, and palpable cysts can be felt. Laboratory tests show an increase in total white blood cell count.

Treatment methods for dog mastitis:

1. Once symptoms of mastitis are found in the mother dog, immediately isolate the puppies, clean the mammary glands, and squeeze out milk. Squeeze the glands every 2-3 hours during the day and every 6 hours at night to reduce pressure on the mammary glands and relieve pain.

2. Injecting antibiotics into the nipples has a good effect. After squeezing out milk from the mother dog, use a milk catheter to inject penicillin and streptomycin into the mammary glands 1-2 times a day. Pinch the nipple with two fingers and gently knead the mammary glands to ensure that the medication spreads as much as possible. Squeeze out any remaining milk before each injection.

3. Apply local cold compress during the acute period of inflammation. Apply local heat compress during the chronic period.
