The normal estrus cycle of dogs is twice a year, usually in spring from March to May and in autumn from September to November. When a female dog is in estrus, her body and behavior will show specific signs. Male dogs do not have a regular estrus cycle. During the breeding season when female dogs are in estrus, the testes become functionally active. When they smell the specific odor of a female dog in estrus, they become excited and ready for mating.
The estrus cycle of dogs can be divided into four stages:
1. Proestrus: This is the preparatory stage of estrus, lasting about 7-10 days. The reproductive system begins to prepare for ovulation. The eggs are close to maturity, the epithelium of the reproductive tract begins to proliferate, glandular activity increases, secretion increases, the vulva becomes congested, swollen, reddened, moist, and secretes a mucous mixed with blood. Male dogs may be attracted by the scent, but mating is not allowed by the female dog.
2. Estrus: This is the period when the signs of estrus are most obvious and the female dog is receptive to mating, lasting about 6-14 days. The vulva continues to swell and become soft, the secreted mucus changes to a lighter color, and bleeding decreases or stops. The female dog actively approaches the male dog and when the male dog mounts, she voluntarily lowers her waist, moves her hindquarters towards the male dog, tilts her tail to one side, opens and closes her vulva, allowing mating. 2-3 days after estrus, the female dog begins ovulation, which is the best time for mating.
3. Metestrus: The swelling of the vulva recedes, gradually returning to normal, and the temperament becomes calm. The male dog is not allowed to approach. This stage generally lasts for two months before entering the anestrus period. If the female dog is pregnant, the metestrus is followed by the pregnancy period.
4. Anestrus: The reproductive organs become inactive. This stage generally lasts for about three months before entering the next proestrus.
Male dogs usually reach estrus at 7-10 months. Male dogs do not have a fixed estrus period when they become adults, and they will go into estrus with the female dog. If mating is required, dogs can be
