Causes and preventive measures of canine osteitis

Causes of canine osteitis:

1. Exogenous infection, most cases of osteomyelitis are infected through this route. Pathogens infect bone tissue through wounds or surgical incisions. Seen after bite wounds, deep stab wounds, gunshot wounds and open fractures that directly hurt the bone, orthopedic surgery.

2. Infection can also be caused by the spread of purulent inflammation in soft tissue around the bone.

3. Blood-borne infection mainly occurs in young dogs, and is caused by the transfer of pathogenic bacteria from infection foci in other parts of the body to bone tissue through blood circulation. Common primary infection foci include umbilical cord inflammation, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, and arthritis.

Preventive measures for canine osteitis:

1. Sufficient antibiotics are applied to the whole body of sick dogs. Broad-spectrum antibiotics were used at the beginning of the disease, and continued until 1 week after the inflammation disappeared.

2. In case of local abscess or ineffective treatment for several days, the wound should be expanded and pus drained, rinsed and drained. If empyema is suspected, surgery should be performed to drill through the bone cortex to drain the pus and decompress it. If there is a "sequestrum" or cavity found on probing or X-ray examination, the sequestrum is removed surgically.

3. If the internal fixation of the fracture is infected, the internal fixation material should not be removed, and the fixation should be strengthened if the fixation is unstable.

4. For dogs with chronic osteomyelitis, systemic medication and local treatment should be adhered to.

5. For those who cannot control the inflammation or prevent the spread of inflammation, if it is in the limbs, it can be considered to amputate from the lesion.
