Diagnostic criteria for canine esophagitis:

1. All or part of the abnormality of the esophageal mucosa can be found through endoscopy.

2. Biopsy is helpful for diagnosis.

Treatment for canine esophagitis:

1. Treatment includes the use of antacids and H2 receptor antagonists. Cimetidine, 5mg/kg, 3 times a day; ranitidine, 2mg/kg, 2 times a day, can increase the pH in the stomach and promote the healing of the esophageal mucosa.

2. In severe cases, proton pump inhibitor omeprazole, 0.75 mg/kg, should be given once a day. Cisapride, 0.5mg/kg, 3 times a day, can increase the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter.
