Causes of difficult labor in dogs:
1. Mild contractions: Some female dogs have poor physical condition and are weak during contractions. It may be due to lack of strength during contractions or because the dogs have a small amount of exercise and are excessively overweight, which can also cause weak contractions. Environmental factors can also cause the dogs to have weak contractions.
2. Narrow vagina: If the mother dog's vagina is narrow, even if the puppies are not large in size, they will not be able to secrete normally, leading to difficult labor.
3. Abnormal fetal position: Just like humans, if the position of the fetus is abnormal and not in the correct delivery state, the mother dog will not be able to give birth normally, resulting in difficult labor that requires a caesarean section.
4. Puppies too big: If the mother dog consumes excessive nutrition during pregnancy and is unable to absorb it well, the nutrients will be absorbed by the puppies, causing them to develop larger, which can prevent the mother dog from delivering smoothly and result in difficult labor.
5. Placental detachment: If the dog's pregnancy period has not yet arrived, or the delivery period has not ended, but the dog's placenta has already detached, it can easily lead to hypoxia in the fetus, endangering their lives.
Treatment for difficult labor in dogs:
1. Due to the difficulty of correcting fetal position in the mother dog's uterus, after confirming the cause, assistance in labor should be implemented quickly. For dogs with dystocia, medication-induced labor combined with forceps traction can be used for assistance. For dystocia caused by other factors, caesarean section should be performed immediately.
2. When there are no abnormalities in the birth canal (the cervix is fully dilated), and dystocia is considered due to lack of labor strength, intramuscular injection of 1 unit of oxytocin per kilogram of body weight can be given, with an injection every 20 minutes, generally 2-3 times. In order to improve uterine contractions, intravenous drip of 10% calcium gluconate 10-30 milliliters can be administered.
3. In cases of dystocia caused by abnormalities in the birth canal and fetus, timely medical treatment should be sought for caesarean section.
