Small Portuguese Podengo, also known as Portuguese small hunting dog, has a long history. According to incomplete records, its ancestors may be a small Iberian wolf. It has a lively and smart personality.
Compared with other features, the color and coat variations are not so important. Some individuals have consistent colors, while others have white markings. Some dogs have short and smooth coats, while others have long and rough coats, and all of these variations are acceptable.
In the breeding process of Podengos, the biggest advantage of human intervention is greatly reducing the probability of genetic diseases and defects.
According to records, all small Portuguese Podengo may have two bloodlines, medium-sized Podengo were bred by large Podengo, and small Podengo are not related to them. Nowadays, there are so few large dogs that they are almost gone, but the development of relatively agile medium-sized hunting dogs is much better because their size and personality are well loved. They are widely raised in rural areas in northern Portugal and are highly efficient at work, mainly used for hunting.
Later, through artificial selection, the size of medium-sized Podengo has also been reduced to a certain extent, but its main features have been preserved. This situation is very similar to that of yellow-brown visual hunting dogs (such as: the Pharaoh Hound).
This dog is suitable for accompanying and taking care of children, getting along well with children and enjoying playing with them. It is intelligent, gentle, has strong learning ability, and is easy to train. It can also get along harmoniously with other dog breeds and has alertness.
However, due to its active nature, it has higher requirements for exercise and activity space, so it is not suitable for crowded city life. Moreover, its coat needs to be brushed every day, so it is not suitable for busy people to raise.
