One, acute pneumonia
One of the common diseases in snakes. Its manifestation is that snakes have difficulty breathing, their mouths remain open, they are unwilling to capture prey, they stay outside of their nests for a long time, the onset is relatively sudden, and it can cause a large number of deaths when severe. It often occurs during the period when female snakes lay eggs or give birth, because they are weak at this time, do not intake water, and the humid and hot weather makes them susceptible to illness. The preventive measures are to provide sufficient clean water to female snakes during the egg-laying (birth) period, ensure good ventilation, and lower the surrounding temperature.
Two, mold spot disease
Common in captive snakes, especially in species such as pit vipers and cantils. This disease often occurs in poor living environments, with small activity ranges and humid environments. The main preventive measures are to keep the snake's habitat dry and allow the snake to have a certain range of activity. Regularly use lime to sweep and absorb moisture, or wrap the lime in paper and place it on one side of the snake's nest, and replace it regularly.
Treatment: Apply 2% iodine tincture to the affected area of the snake's body twice a day. Alternatively, soak the snake in a potassium permanganate solution, and it can be cured after 1 week. Mold spot disease should be detected and treated early, and the treatment effect is not good in the late stage.
Three, parasites
There are many types of parasitic infections in snakes, including flagellate tongue worms, nematodes, tapeworms, roundworms, etc., and ticks and mites parasitize on the snake's skin.
Treatment method: Orally administer veterinary Dichlorvos solution, 1 dosage per kilogram of snake body weight, continuously for 5 days, which can kill or expel various parasites in the body. In addition, Fenbendazole, Levamisole, DDT, etc. can also be used. For ticks and mites on the skin, put the snake in a nylon bag, soak it in Dichlorvos solution for 10 minutes, and rinse the skin with water after the ticks and mites die and fall off.
Four, snake stomatitis
It is almost the most common disease in snakes. Stomatitis is most common in venomous snakes because venom extraction can easily cause oral injuries. Improper repeated venom extraction methods and careless operations can easily cause stomatitis. Some bacteria are prone to invade the cheek area during hibernation, which may also cause stomatitis. During the feeding season, oral injuries can also occur due to fighting or swallowing large prey. If fed artificially, the incidence of stomatitis is higher. The main manifestations are swelling of the upper and lower jaws, inability to open or close the mouth, affected feeding, sometimes redness of the oral gums and frontal area (normally pale), and in severe cases, there may be purulent discharge in some tooth sockets. Eventually, due to inflammation spreading, the snake cannot intake water, becomes weak, and dies.
