Leonberger, also known as the Leonberg or the Leonberger Dog, originated in Germany in the 19th century. It was bred by breeders using St. Bernard, Newfoundland, and Great Pyrenees to improve and refine the breed.
The Leonberger is a water-loving breed. Its fur has good waterproofing and its toes have webbing, allowing it to move freely in water. With specialized training, it can be an excellent water rescue dog.
The Leonberger is tall, strong, muscular, and powerful. Its majestic and sturdy demeanor gives a sense of security. It is intelligent, affectionate, friendly towards humans, especially children. It is loyal to its owner and has high obedience.
In 1840, Mayor Heinrich Essig of Leonberg, Germany wanted to breed a new breed of dog. The mayor's requirement was that the dog's appearance should resemble the dog on the city's coat of arms. He hoped that this breed could become a unique charm of Leonberg. Therefore, when this dog was bred, its name was designated as the Leonberger.
The Leonberger was eventually bred and successfully reproduced by the famous German dog breeder Heinrich Essig. He crossed St. Bernard, Newfoundland, and Great Pyrenees several times and selected and bred them. For many years after the breeding success, this dog was not allowed to be exported. It was not until it was accidentally exported to Japan and loved by the Japanese royal family that it attracted attention from the world, but also sparked jealousy and slander. By 1832, after being recommended by a monk, this dog was brought to Switzerland, where it received good evaluations from the Swiss people.
The Leonberger likes quietness and it is difficult to hear their barking. They can get along well with children and are very loyal to their owners. They have a high degree of obedience and are good at swimming. Their fur is waterproof and their toes have webbing. They are excellent water rescue dogs and are suitable for modern urban life.

When Leonbergers come to a new environment, they may feel fearful and stay nervous because they are not adapted. At this time, it is important to take care of their emotions and avoid stimulating them with excessive behavior. Avoid yelling and teasing them with many people around. You can place them in a quiet room to let them gradually familiarize themselves with the new environment. Do not change their food habits temporarily. Wait until they adapt and then interact with them to build a bond.
If they are willing to leave the kennel or move around indoors, it means they have started to adapt to the new environment.
In addition, during the process of raising Leonberger puppies, it is important to seize the opportunity to train them to defecate in a designated area.
This breed usually has a habit. After arriving in a new environment, the first place they sleep will be considered the safest place. Afterwards, they will automatically come to this place to sleep every day. Therefore, on the first night they sleep, they must be kept in the kennel or a designated place that you have planned, even for adult dogs.
1、Do not bathe frequently
When bathing a dog, of course, it should not be too frequent. The frequency of bathing a dog depends on the dog's hygiene condition. In hot weather, it can be bathed once or twice more, and in winter it can be reduced once or twice, but in general, it should not exceed 5 times. Otherwise, it will damage its fur and skin!
2、Be diligent in grooming
Dogs shed hair almost every day, especially in spring and autumn. It is important to groom them frequently if you want their fur to grow well. Pet owners can use a pet-specific comb to help the dog remove naturally shed hair and avoid tangling. Groom them once in the morning and evening for about five minutes each time.
3、Sunbathe
Sunbathing is good for the growth of a dog's fur. In addition to making the fur more shiny, letting the dog sunbathe can also help sterilize. While sunbathing, you can let the dog exercise a bit, which can help improve their physical fitness, promote blood circulation, and help grow healthier fur.
4、Deworming
Poor fur condition is actually closely related to parasites. Parasites absorb a large amount of nutrients from the dog's body, deprive nutrients, so deworming is essential. When deworming, it is recommended to do internal and external deworming together. Deworming medications can cause significant damage to the dog's gastrointestinal tract, so it is recommended to give probiotics regularly to relieve gastrointestinal discomfort.
5、Pay attention to diet
In order to have beautiful fur, dogs must have a good nutritional foundation and pay attention to daily diet. On the one hand, feed the dog nutritious and healthy dog food, choose a dog food that is suitable for the dog and has sufficient nutrition to meet the dog's needs. On the other hand, the dog can be given a moderate amount of lean meat, boiled egg yolks, and vegetable oil.
