The Black Penta Lobster is native to Thailand and typically measures around 4-7.5 centimeters in size. Despite being called 'Black Penta', its shape is different from a pentagon, with the central protruding horn being more developed and extending outward.
Although being called Penta Lobster, its shape is different from a pentagon. The horn on the head of the male lobster is slender, and the protruding horn on the upper side of the prothorax is more developed, extending to both sides, while the lower prothorax horn has evolved to be very small. The elytra color is not bright yellow, but dark black. The legs are shorter compared to the Penta Lobster.
Black Penta Lobster belongs to the genus Eupatorus, also known as the golden turtle beetle genus in China. It is a medium to large-sized beetle that is distributed on the Asian continent. As the name suggests, male adults of this genus generally have up to four thoracic horns and one head horn, which should be considered the genus with the highest average number of horns among beetles. Although they have many horns, the horn structure of this genus is not really suitable for fighting. However, due to the unique feeding habits of adult beetles in this genus, they do not need to compete with other beetles and beetles outside the same genus in their native habitat.
It is recommended to keep the Black Penta Lobster as a pet for those who love climbing insects. It has a unique appearance with four protruding angles on its shiny black thoracic plate and a central horn on its head. The bright yellow elytra adds to its unique and beautiful shape. Most of the processed products of the commonly seen Penta Lobster in the international specimen market come from Thailand.
During the hibernation period, the environment should be dark, and the container does not need to be too large. Wood chips or sphagnum moss can be used as padding. Pay attention to maintaining humidity. The depth should be sufficient to completely bury the adult insect in the soil or sphagnum moss, so that the adult insect will feel more secure. Place objects such as tree bark on the surface for the adult insect to turn over. Occasionally, the hibernating insect may crawl to the surface. If there is no tree bark for it to turn over, it will inevitably consume energy and may cause death! Keep the temperature in an environment of 22-28 degrees. The higher the temperature, the shorter the hibernation period.
The Black Penta Lobster has a moderate difficulty in breeding and keeping. When arranging the breeding room, it is recommended to mix in rotten leaf soil or place bamboo leaves, which helps increase the number of female lobsters laying eggs. The temperature for rearing the larvae is recommended to be controlled at 25 degrees Celsius, and the food material can be fermented sawdust, preferably mixed with some rotten leaf soil. When the larvae transform into pupae, they have a similar situation to the Nanyang Lobster and require a solid soil layer.
