Honduran curly hair spider (scientific name: Tlitocatlalbopilosum) is native to the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica and Honduras and is one of the most classic pet bird-eating spider species.
Due to the relatively easy reproduction and large yield, the price of their small juveniles is relatively cheap. Unlike the members of the same genus, such as the Mexican red knee and Mexican red foot, which come from relatively dry desert areas, the Honduran curly hair spider comes from the tropical rainforests of Central America, similar to the habitat of the Mexican red tail and Mexican rust tail. Therefore, in captivity, it is necessary to arrange their enclosures based on the rainforest species and provide them with slightly moist substrate. The suitable temperature is 28-30℃, and the suitable humidity is 80%. It is recommended to use slightly moist peat, coconut bricks, and clay as the substrate.
Not recommended for keeping
1. Fusarium disease
The high humidity and temperature are the causes of this disease. The spider suffering from this disease has stiff limb joints, decreased appetite, slow movement, dull appearance, and has fungus spots. There are two methods to handle this disease. One is to kill the fungus directly by spraying it with Jinhui. The other is to enhance the spider's resistance by allowing it to take tetracycline and yeast tablets, which can penetrate the spider's body.
2. Parasitic infection
Spider mites are small in size, usually round or oval. Mites are hermaphrodite oviparous and have different development processes for males and females. Mites mainly affect spiders and disrupt the normal rest of adult spiders. Some mites parasitize on spiders, weaken their resistance, and cause them to become emaciated. At the same time, mites also carry mold spores such as Aspergillus. There are two methods to handle spider mites. One is to use bait to catch and kill them. You can mix dry chicken or pig manure with a small amount of roasted soybean cake or rapeseed cake powder, put it in a sandbag and tie it tightly, and place it in the breeding box. The mites will enter the bag to feed and can be scalded to death with boiling water after 1-2 days. Another method is to use a safe and non-toxic pesticide like Jinhui to kill them. It must be safe and non-toxic, otherwise it may harm the spiders.
Nematodes have a slim, elongated body with slightly pointed ends. They are generally milky white and transparent in color. Their life is usually simple. Except for a few nematodes that reproduce through parthenogenesis, the vast majority of nematodes mate and lay eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae, and the larvae molt 2-3 times to become adults. Nematodes mainly harm young spiders, especially during molting, and mainly feed on spider juices, causing infections on the spider's body surface. This parasite can also be treated effectively with a safe and non-toxic pesticide like Jinhui.
Growth Rate: Faster than the average beginner spider
Optimum Temperature: 20-29°C (Around 20 degrees is not conducive to the health of the curly hair)
Optimum Humidity: 50-80% (Slightly higher relative humidity for juveniles)
Recommended Substrate: Moist peat/coco brick
Lifestyle: Terrestrial/ Burrower (Juveniles have a habit of digging holes, so the substrate should be slightly thicker during the juvenile stage)
Diet: Small insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, and mealworms...
Aggressiveness: Almost none, but can become aggressive if provoked
Urticating Hairs: Rarely kicks hairs
Temperament: Generally lazy and inactive, not very temperamental, but can be aggressive at times. May suddenly and quickly jump. Very fast.
