Experienced enthusiasts of climbing pets suggest keeping the Black Thick-tailed Scorpion. The main reason why scorpions are prone to illness and death is that novice keepers are not familiar with the scorpion's habits and do not know how to adjust scorpion keeping techniques according to climate conditions.
Black abdomen disease: The main symptoms are black belly, abnormal feces, inactivity, and loss of appetite in scorpions. This disease generally occurs in winter or early spring, mainly due to low external temperature and high humidity, resulting in excessive moisture in the scorpions' bodies. By raising the temperature of the scorpion's nest appropriately and reducing humidity, the occurrence of this disease can be prevented.
Decomposition disease: The main symptoms are swelling and blackening of the abdomen, loss of appetite, inactivity, followed by whole-body decomposition and mass death. This disease is mainly caused by deteriorated feed or unclean drinking water, and can be treated with antibacterial drugs such as loperamide and a small amount of yeast tablets. It is particularly important to maintain environmental and dietary hygiene to prevent the occurrence of this disease.
Scabies disease: The main symptoms are extreme restlessness in scorpions, with yellow granular mites lurking in the chest and abdomen, which gradually torture the scorpions to death. This disease is mainly caused by excessive humidity in dry scorpion nests. To prevent this disease, it can be disinfected with a 1% bleach solution and a 3.5% potassium permanganate solution sprayed on the scorpion nest, or a 4.5% formalin solution can be used for disinfection.
Drying disease: The main symptoms are yellowing of the tail, flattening of the anterior abdomen, and lack of gloss throughout the body in scorpions. This disease is mainly caused by long-term water shortage in scorpions. As long as water supply is paid attention to and the humidity of the scorpion nest is kept moderate, the occurrence of this disease can be avoided.
1. Maintain the temperature: When the temperature is below 15°C, the scorpion enters a dry hibernation state and stops or slows down its growth. When the temperature is above 40°C, the scorpion desperately seeks moisture, sometimes leading to death. Therefore, the optimal temperature for the growth and development of the scorpion is between 25°C and 30°C.
2. Control the humidity: Scorpions prefer dry environments and dislike moisture. The ideal relative humidity is between 45% and 50%. The moisture content of the sand should be between 15% and 20%, so that the sand is not too dry or too wet, providing a comfortable living space for the scorpions. It is important to avoid excessive moisture in the sand, as it may cause scabies and lead to death.
3. Provide sufficient drinking water: Success in scorpion breeding depends on the availability of drinking water. Lack of water can result in scorpions becoming excessively dry and lead to cannibalism and death. Therefore, it is recommended to use a sponge soaked in clean water or cold water placed in the scorpion enclosure on a daily basis. Every 3 to 5 days, adding an antibacterial drug (such as tetracycline, sulfonamides, etc.) to the drinking water of the scorpions is beneficial. Dissolve one tablet of the medication in about 4 kilograms of cold boiled water, soak it on the sponge, and place it in the scorpion enclosure.
