Chinese name: 墨西哥木蝎
English name: Mexican Bark Scorpion
Geographic distribution: Central America, Mexico
Habitat: Wild habitat is dry grasslands and forests. It has a gentle temperament and moderate toxicity (causing severe pain).
Physical features: 8~10cm. This species is a giant among scorpions, as most scorpions are small in size and have low toxicity, but this species can grow up to about 10cm, making it a large desert scorpion species.
Diet: It likes to eat small crickets, spiders, small insects, and even the corpses of some animals or large insects.
Care: Suitable temperature: 25~28 degrees Celsius; suitable humidity: 60~80%.
The scorpion is definitely one of the most detested creatures on earth, and most importantly, this creature possesses venom that is even more terrifying than that of venomous snakes. In Mexico, scorpions appear in many unexpected places, from forests, grasslands to caves, and even in mountains. Fortunately, although they have a hateful appearance, only 25 species of scorpions are capable of causing fatal harm to humans.
The scabies is also known as the scorpion plague, which is more likely to occur from June to August. It is often caused by environmental humidity, high air humidity, and food mold. The pathogen is mostly green mold fungus. The infected scorpion often has yellow-brown or red-brown small patches of mold on the anterior thoracic abdominal plate and the anterior abdomen, which gradually expand into large areas. Then the scorpion's appetite decreases, growth stops, and in the later stage, it becomes lethargic and eventually dies due to refusal to eat. Dissection reveals masses of green mold-like hyphae in the body.
Prevention and control: prevention is the main focus and appropriately adjust the air humidity to eradicate pathogens. ①The feeding plate and water tray should be washed regularly to eliminate moldy food; ②Disinfect the breeding area with 1% to 2% formalin or 0.1% potassium permanganate solution; ③The infected scorpion should be isolated and treated, and the dead scorpion should be promptly picked up and burned; ④The infected scorpion should be fed with a mixture of 18% terramycin or 1g chloramphenicol or 1-1.5g long-acting sulfonamides and 1000g of feed until it is cured.
The black rot disease, also known as body rot disease, generally occurs throughout the year with a short course and a high mortality rate. It mainly occurs due to feeding rotten feed, polluted drinking water, or infection with black mold fungus by mistakenly eating the corpse of a scorpion with black rot disease. In the early stage of the disease, the abdomen of the scorpion swells and turns black, it is rarely active, and the appetite decreases. Then black rot ulcers appear on the anterior abdomen, and black mucus can flow out when pressed by hand, ultimately leading to death.
Prevention and control: ① Keep the feed and water fresh; ② Regularly disinfect the breeding area with 1%-2% formalin water solution; ③ The infected scorpion should be isolated and treated, and the dead scorpion should be picked up and burned; ④ The infected scorpion can be fed with 1g food mold or 0.5g erythromycin or 2.5g baking soda or 0.5g sulfonamide tablets and 500g of feed until it is cured; ⑤ Herbal medicine can be used, such as 0.2-0.5g of gallnut per kilogram of body weight, for treating the infected scorpion.
The hemiplegia, also known as the tail dragging disease, often occurs during the humid period at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. It is caused by the accumulation of a large amount of fat in the scorpion's body due to long-term feeding of high-fat feed. The body of the infected scorpion is shiny, the limb segments are enlarged, the movement is difficult and sluggish, and there is red oily mucus-like secretion in the oral organs. The scorpion begins to die after 5-10 days of the disease.
Prevention and control: ① Do not feed or feed less high-fat feed; ② Appropriately adjust the ambient temperature and humidity; ③ The treatment can be done by fasting for 3-5 days or by feeding a mixture of 3g rhubarb soda tablets, 50g toasted bran, and 60g of water until it is cured.
The abdominal distension disease often occurs during the continuous rainy period in early spring and autumn due to low temperature, causing indigestion in the scorpion. The abdomen of the infected scorpion is swollen with green veins, it reacts slowly, the appetite is sluggish, and it begins to die 10-15 days after the onset of the disease.
Prevention and control: ① Maintain the breeding temperature at 25-39°C; ②The infected scorpion can be fed with a mixture of 18% multi-enzyme tablets, rhubarb soda tablets each, 0.1g sulfonamide tablets, and 100g of feed until it is cured.
