Red Rosefish, also known as Spotted Cardinalfish (Apogon maculatus), belongs to the Cardinalfish family and the genus Apogon. It is a coral reef fish that is native to Sri Lanka in Asia.
The body is spindle-shaped, slightly flattened sideways, and the tail fin is forked. The body length can reach 5 centimeters. Red Rosefish has a black longitudinal stripe with serrated edges from the front of the head to the base of the caudal peduncle. The dorsal surface is purplish-red, the ventral surface is pale yellow, and the whole body is mainly rose-red, hence the name Red Rosefish. During mating, the Red Rosefish displays a brighter red color, similar to cherry blossoms, hence the nickname Cherry Fish. Red Rosefish is extremely colorful and delicately small, deeply loved by tropical fish enthusiasts.

The species is mainly distributed in the Kelani River and Nilara River in Sri Lanka.
Included in the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (LC).
However, due to excessive fishing for this species as an ornamental fish in its native habitat, it should still be a concern.
It is recommended to keep Red Rosefish in an aquarium for fish enthusiasts. Red Rosefish, also known as Spotted Cardinalfish, is mild-mannered and suitable for cohabitation with other small tropical fish species. They are not demanding in terms of water quality and can thrive in water temperatures ranging from 20-25℃. They primarily feed on animal-based food and are not picky eaters. Red Rosefish are timid and will hide when there is loud noise. However, they sometimes enjoy jumping out of the water, so it is important to cover the fish tank with a net to prevent them from escaping.
Prevention and Treatment of Parrotfish Ulcers
(1) Pathogen and Transmission: Bacteria are the pathogen. Transmission routes: copepods, diseased fish, or tools. Several tropical fish species are prone to this disease, such as two-year-old tiger parrotfish, parrotfish older than one year, red parrotfish, and Moray. These fish are particularly prone to death due to this disease, but the morbidity rate is not high. The natural mortality rate is not high.
(2) Symptoms: Blisters grow from the muscle layer of the fish's body, sometimes accompanied by a large amount of purulent blood.
(3) Treatment: After the blister has matured, incise and drain the purulent material, then rinse it clean with penicillin water and apply penicillin powder or antibiotic powder for better results. Severe cases should be eliminated immediately, and if bulges are found on the body, they should be treated separately. Larger fish can be given intramuscular injections of penicillin (40,000-80,000 units) or washed with medicated solution. To prevent this disease, maintain clean water quality and prevent external fish injuries.
Prevention and Treatment of Parrotfish Water Mold Disease
(1) Pathogen and Symptoms: Various species of water molds are the pathogens. Routes of transmission: copepods, diseased fish. Houses where fish have been kept for 2-3 years are full of mold, and the mold can contaminate new water in 2-3 days. The disease does not occur when fish have no external injuries or are in good health. On the contrary, it can occur immediately. Although it is contagious, the morbidity rate is not high, and the mortality rate is also not high. However, the disease course is long (several months) and not easy to cure. White hair or white hair entangles the external injuries of the fish. Fish eggs are more susceptible to infection.
(2) Treatment: There is no specific medicine, prevention is the main approach. Maintain clean water quality and keep the fish healthy. Be gentle in daily operations and when catching fish, to avoid causing external injuries to the fish. 0.5%-1% salt can inhibit the growth of mold. Ventilate and sunbathe frequently, increase exposure to ultraviolet light, and ensure water circulation, as these are the best preventive measures. In addition, infected fish can be caught and the white hair at the site of the external injury can be removed with tweezers. Applying penicillin powder to the affected area has a certain therapeutic effect.
Red Rosefish, also known as Spotted Cardinalfish (Apogon maculatus), belongs to the Cardinalfish family and the genus Apogon. It is a coral reef fish that is native to Sri Lanka in Asia. The body is spindle-shaped, slightly flattened sideways, and the tail is as long as the body. A water tank with caves and peaceful conditions of over 120 liters is suitable for keeping this fish that is not fond of swimming. Do not keep too many of them in one tank as they are aggressive towards fish of the same species, while a pair of male and female will get along well. It is a nocturnal fish that can be observed under red light. It requires a balanced diet and vitamins. Shrimp, seafood, bloodworms, and live fish can be fed according to its body size.
