Panda-Colored Long-haired Anglo-Ferret is a type of mammal in the Mustelidae family. It is clean, naughty, refined, and clever, with a small body size; it sleeps for up to 18 hours a day. Adult ferrets have a body length of 30-50cm and a tail length of 10-20cm (similar to a cat's body length), weighing about 1.2kg. The average lifespan is 8-11 years.
The domestication of pet ferrets started more than 200 years ago, but as early as 3000 BC, domesticated ferrets were already found in Egypt. They were raised together with European Persian cats. Later, during the Crusades in the 11th century, ferrets were brought to Europe as a species with practical value. In the 16th century, ferrets were shipped from Europe to America to control the growth of rodents. People would release them from cages to chase after hiding field mice.
Today, they have become the third most popular pet after dogs and cats. Especially in the United States, Europe, and Japan, keeping ferrets has become a fashionable trend. Currently, there are over 8 million pet ferrets in the United States alone, and ferrets not only have their own clubs but also regularly hold "Olympic Games" for pet ferrets.
It is recommended for pet lovers to keep Anglo-Ferrets, as they are as clean as cats and like to curl up their bodies to sleep. They are smart and clever. At the same time, they are friendly like dogs and enjoy running around with their owners. They are especially curious about everything, fearless and not depressed, with a spirit of exploration, bringing endless joy to their owners. Ferrets can accompany their owners for at least 15 to 20 years.
1. Heatstroke
When the ambient temperature is around 30 degrees, pet ferrets may become tired, and above 30 degrees, they are easily prone to heat exhaustion. High temperatures increase the likelihood of heatstroke. To avoid this problem, you should always ensure a fresh water source, and their cage should be placed in a well-ventilated area. Avoid drafts and try not to use air conditioning for them. If your pet ferret shows signs of heatstroke, such as panting, red gums, protruding tongue, weakness, trembling, lethargy, or unconscious twitching, you should immediately place their cage in a cool and well-ventilated place and put the ferret in warm water (never use cold water), and contact a veterinarian immediately. Remember to put a bottle of ice water in their cage with mineral water for them.
2. Hairball Syndrome
Pet ferrets have some habits like cats, such as grooming themselves, so they can also develop hairball syndrome. Using pet ferret hairball paste can solve this problem by lubricating and eliminating the matted hair in their stomach.
3. Intestinal Blockage
Sometimes, ferrets may ingest soft pet toys, shoe heels, erasers, chair cushions, hair accessories, or rubber bands made of rubber, leading to this rapidly fatal problem. Therefore, you should keep small rubber products that are easily ingested by pet ferrets out of their reach and pay attention to their eating and chewing behaviors to prevent it.
4. Ear Mite Infestation
If you find that your pet frequently shakes its head, scratches its ears, and screams, it is likely that ear mites are causing trouble. These parasites can make the ferret's ear dirty and cause them great discomfort. Therefore, you should regularly clean their ears to reduce the chances of mite infestation. If ear mites are indeed found, although it is not a serious problem, you should still take them to see a veterinarian.
5. Colds
Pet ferrets are more sensitive to cold germs. If someone in your home has a cold, keep your pet ferret away from that person. Wash your hands before and after touching the baby. If the ferret continues to show a loss of appetite and other adverse symptoms for 2-3 days, please take them to see a veterinarian.
6. Scratching
There are many reasons for scratching, and one of them is dry skin. You can give them a bath, but never blow dry them with hot air. Sometimes, you can also use a humidifier to increase the ambient temperature.
1. If your ferret is under one year old and over four months old, you can feed dry food, but do not overfeed. Currently, they cannot digest it.
2. If your ferret is under four months old, it can only eat main food. Do not feed other things such as nutritional paste, hair removal paste, and snacks. Moreover, the main food should be soaked and fed (it is recommended to mix some water with the powder to make a paste, because it is difficult to soak the food directly and it can only eat when it is soaked in water).
3. The ferret can only eat ferret food, specialized snacks, nutritional paste, water, hair removal paste, specialized fur care products, and probiotics.
Panda-Colored Long-haired Anglo-Ferret can eat ferret food. The owner should bathe it once a week, clean its ears every half month, and promptly clean its excrement every day. To ensure the health of Anglo-Ferret, it needs regular medical examinations for parasites, injection of distemper and rabies vaccines, and also needs to prevent heartworm disease. Panda-Colored Long-haired Anglo-Ferret is afraid of heat, so attention should be paid to heatstroke prevention in summer.
