Like cats and dogs, ferrets can accompany their owners for more than ten years. Generally speaking, the lifespan of a ferret is 8 to 12 years. Young ferrets are lively and active. After 5 years old, they will become quiet. But even when they are quiet, they still like to play with their owners and ask for more care. They will climb onto your lap while you are watching TV and let you stroke their bellies as they fall asleep.
Blind ferret is the domesticated history of MustelaPulouriusFuro that has been over 2000 years. It was initially tamed by farmers for catching mice and hunting. Due to its fierce carnivorous nature, ferrets were domesticated for a long time.
The domestication of modern pet ferrets started over 200 years ago, but there were already domesticated ferrets in Egypt around 3000 BC. They were bred together with European Persian cats. Later, during the Crusades in the 11th century, ferrets were brought to Europe as a species with practical value. In the 16th century, ferrets were shipped from Europe to America to control the growth of rodent species. People released them from cages to chase hidden field mice.
Today, it has become the third largest pet after dogs and cats. Especially in the United States, Europe, and Japan, raising ferrets has become a fashionable trend. Currently, the number of pet ferrets in the United States is over 8 million, and ferrets not only have their own clubs but also regularly hold "Olympic Games" for pet ferrets.
Suggested for pet enthusiasts, the most distinctive characteristic of Angora is their curiosity and cheerfulness, they enjoy playing with humans. Due to their endless curiosity and adventurous spirit, they can't stay idle for a moment, and often crawl into the back or underneath of furniture to explore new things. They gather anything they like and hide it in a hidden place. They also establish their own territory and are playful, smart, and easily approachable, always ready to play. They especially enjoy going in and out with humans, so they can be put on a harness like a dog or placed in a cage when going out for a walk.
Angora is a social animal, although they like to be close to humans, they prefer to play with their companions. As long as the space is sufficient, it is not a big problem to have multiple ferrets together. If they are left alone for a long time without feeling lonely, or if their activities are reduced causing them to lack exercise, they will feel stressed and become obese or even get sick, so don't keep them in a cage all the time, let them come out and play frequently. Because of their lively and active personality, there are also various ferret-specific toys available on the market to keep them entertained.
1. Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a symptom that can be caused by many reasons. Common causes include physical stimulation, bacterial infection, and viral infection.
Feeding nuts snacks and ingesting indigestible foreign objects can cause diarrhea, often resulting in nasal-like feces, sometimes mixed with blood streaks and undigested foreign objects. Easily changing diet or adding other feed can also lead to diarrhea.
Diarrhea caused by bacterial infection is often due to eating spoiled ferret food and dirty ferret drinking water. The feces are usually very watery and not formed, the sick ferret is depressed, and the food intake decreases.
Stress reaction can also easily cause diarrhea, especially when pet ferrets arrive at a pet store after long-distance transportation within one or two days. In this case, no treatment is needed and it will recover on its own.
2. Cough and sneeze
Generally, it is transient cough that does not require treatment and can be observed. If persistent cough occurs, it is necessary to determine whether it is caused by foreign objects stuck in the throat, and coughing may also occur during the molting period. If several ferrets are placed in the same space when shedding fur, coughing or sneezing may be found when the customer receives the ferret due to mutual hair stimulation. Generally, no treatment is needed and it can self-heal.
Cough can also occur when having a cold and requires corresponding treatment.
Feasible treatment: inject 0.3ml/kg of cefazolin injection solution intramuscularly, twice a day. The remaining injection solution can be stored in a cleaned penicillin bottle. Cephalosporin antibiotics commonly used in pet hospitals can also be used. For severe diarrhea, it is necessary to feed glucose physiological saline, using a syringe to feed from the corner of the mouth into the mouth. For severely weak individuals, dexamethasone injection of 0.3ml/kg subcutaneously can be given. Nutritional paste helps with recovery and recuperation in the later stage.
Diarrhea caused by viral infection is relatively severe and will be explained separately.
Try not to change the feed composition arbitrarily and use designated food.
3. Eye problems
The main symptoms of eye diseases include turbid eyeballs, excessive secretions adhering to the eyelids, swollen eyelids, and pus on the upper and lower eyelids.
Turbid eyeballs occur in older ferrets and become turbid due to aging. Eye trauma can also cause turbidity in the eyes. Eye drops can be used for eye trauma in ferrets, and it can generally be cured.
Excessive secretions sticking to the eyelids and swollen eyelids are generally caused by bacterial infections, and hydrocortisone eye drops can easily treat them.
Pus on the eyelid is mostly caused by trauma. Treatment method: make a small incision on the pus, squeeze out the pus, sprinkle with anti-inflammatory powder, and cooperate with antibiotic injection treatment for 3-5 days to cure.
Fever and canine distemper may also cause the secretion of purulent eye discharge, which requires targeted treatment.
Eversion of the eyelid is a rare abnormal growth condition. Part of the ferret's eyelid skin is loose, and the eyelid edge is turned towards the eyeball, causing eyelashes to constantly irritate the eyeball, resulting in continuous flow of tears and mucus, and adhesion of the eyelids. If this occurs before shipment, it will be resolved on-site and generally will not affect customers.
Cataracts can also occur in older ferrets. It is characterized by whitening of the eyeball, which is very obvious in appearance.
Feasible treatment: For simple turbid eyeballs, tearing, and eye discharge, you can use a cotton swab dipped in physiological saline to wipe the eyes and the surrounding area, and then drip 2-3 drops of eye drops, 2-3 times a day.
1. The digestive system of ferrets is very short and they need to eat specially formulated feed, not cat or dog feed. Domesticated ferrets should be injected with canine distemper and rabies vaccines. Ferrets, like cats, can also suffer from hairballs and need to have them removed regularly from their digestive tract.
2. Food: Blind ferrets like to eat meat and do not need a lot of carbohydrates. They cannot digest excessive fiber, so you can feed them a small amount of fruits, but remember to only give them a little bit each day. Avoid feeding them sweet treats and candies. It is also recommended to buy specialized ferret food to protect their health. Once you have their food prepared, they will "plan their meals" and you won't have to worry too much.
3. Since the owner cannot be with them all the time, buy some toys for them to play with. However, make sure to buy toys that are not easily broken down or swallowed to avoid damage to their digestive system.
4. It is best to buy a dedicated cage for them as their home. Use wood shavings, old newspapers, or torn cloth as padding in the cage. Secure food bowls, water bottles, and litter trays in the cage. They will quickly learn where to eat and where to go to the toilet. They are really clever little creatures. Also, ensure that these utensils are clean and that the food and drinking water are fresh and hygienic.
5. Control the temperature and humidity indoors. Do not let the temperature fluctuate too much as low temperatures can easily cause them to catch a cold.
1. Remember, do not eat indiscriminately. Before letting it out to play, please close all doors and clean up the rubbish on the floor (ferrets have a curious nature and will eat anything). Generally, eating foreign objects will cause bleeding, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Basically, they eat food, lactic acid bacteria, and strong treasure. You can feed nutritious cream at three and a half months. Snacks can be fed after six months.
2. Keep it indoors in winter, and pay attention to ventilation and shade in summer.
3. Please check the feces of the ferret baby every day to see if it is normal. Generally, the feces before four months are relatively soft, and then the feces will gradually become like toothpaste. Healthy feces should be dark brown in color.
4. If there is sneezing, coughing, and a runny nose at the same time, please use Meibei or add Isatis Root in water.
5. It is necessary to regularly comb the coat of the blind ferret, which is beneficial to the healthy growth of the coat and avoids hair loss or skin diseases.
6. It is necessary to bathe the blind ferret regularly, trim its nails, as long and pointed nails can cause harm to you. Brushing teeth and cleaning ears are also necessary.
