The domestication of pet ferrets began more than 200 years ago, but as early as 3000 BC, ferrets were already being kept as pets in Egypt, raised alongside European Persian cats. Later, during the Crusades in the 11th century, ferrets were brought to Europe as a species with practical value. In the 16th century, ferrets were shipped from Europe to Denmark to control the growth of rodents. People would release them from cages to chase after hidden field mice.
Suggested for pet lovers, Angora ferrets are characterized by their curiosity and cheerfulness, and they enjoy playing with people. Because of their endless curiosity and adventurous spirit, they can never sit still. They often crawl into the back or underneath furniture to explore new things. They will gather anything they like and hide them in secret places. They will also establish their own territory and love to play and be spoiled. They are friendly and easy to get along with, and they always want to play with people. They especially enjoy going in and out with people, so they can be put on a harness or placed in a cage when going out for a walk, just like dogs.
Angora ferrets are social animals. Although they like to be close to people, they prefer to play with their companions. As long as there is enough space, it is not a problem to keep multiple ferrets together. If ferrets are left alone for a long time and do not feel lonely, or if their activities are reduced, causing them to lack exercise, they will feel stressed and become obese or even sick. Therefore, do not keep ferrets in cages all the time. Let them come out and play frequently. Because they are lively and active, there are also various toys specifically for ferrets available on the market to keep them entertained.
1, Heatstroke
When the ambient temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius, pet ferrets will become tired, and they are prone to heat stroke when the temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius. High temperatures increase the possibility of heatstroke. To avoid this problem, you should always ensure a fresh water source, and their cage should be placed in a ventilated area. Avoid draughts and try not to blow air conditioning on them. If the pet ferret shows symptoms of heatstroke, such as panting, red gums, protruding tongue, weakness, trembling, lack of energy, or unconscious twitching, you should immediately place their cage in a cool and ventilated place, and put the ferret in warm water (do not use cold water). Contact a veterinarian immediately. Remember to put a bottle of ice water in the cage for them with mineral water.
2, Hairball Syndrome
Pet ferrets have some habits like cats, such as grooming, so they can also develop hairball syndrome. Using Martrix pet ferret hairball paste can solve this problem by lubricating and removing the tangled hair in their stomach.
3, Intestinal Blockage
Sometimes pet ferrets may swallow soft pet toys, shoe heels, erasers, chair cushions, hair accessories, or rubber bands and other rubber materials, which can lead to this rapidly lethal problem. Therefore, you should keep rubber products that are small and easy for pet ferrets to swallow out of their reach, and always pay attention to their diet and chewing behavior to prevent this from happening.
4, Ear Mites
If you find that your baby frequently shakes their head, scratches their ears, and screams, it is likely that ear mites are causing trouble. These parasites can make the ferret's ear canal very dirty and cause them great pain. Therefore, ear canal cleaning should be done regularly to reduce the possibility of mite infestation. If there are ear mites, although it is not a serious problem, you should still take them to see a veterinarian.
1. Here are some precautions:
1. If your Angora pet ferret is under one year old and over four months old, you can feed it dry food, but do not overfeed it. Their stomachs cannot digest it temporarily.
2. If your Angora pet ferret is under four months old, it can only eat main food. Other foods such as nutritional paste, hair removal paste, and snacks are not allowed. The main food should be soaked and fed (it is recommended to grind it into powder, add some water, and mix it into a paste. If the food is soaked directly, it is difficult to soften and nutrients may be lost, and the ferret can only eat until it is full of water).
3. Ferrets can only eat ferret food, special snacks, nutritional paste, water, hair removal paste, special skin and fur care products, and probiotics.
2. Taboos:
1. Absolutely do not feed any dairy products. Ferrets cannot digest them and do not need them. Drinking milk can cause vomiting and dehydration.
2. Absolutely do not feed fruits, vegetables, snacks for humans, etc. Ferrets cannot digest sugar and fiber.
3. Absolutely do not feed products containing salt. Salt can cause them to become exhausted and should not be fed.
4. Absolutely eat less meat. Generally, ferrets’ daily food already contains enough nutrition, and they do not need meat. Moreover, many functions of pet ferrets have degenerated.
Living environment: The ferret has lost the ability to survive in the wild due to long-term domestication by humans. As responsible owners, we should keep it indoors and be prepared to prevent it from finding any holes to escape.
Temperature and humidity: The ancestors of ferrets originally lived in cool areas in underground burrows, so they cannot adapt to high temperatures and high humidity. High temperatures can cause heatstroke, heat exhaustion, or even death in ferrets. Owners should avoid placing the ferret's cage or nest near vents or in direct sunlight, as well as avoiding proximity to air conditioning or heaters. The suitable humidity for a ferret should be maintained between 50% and 70%, which is beneficial for fur growth.
