marten
. This marten is rarely seen in the domestic market, and there are relatively few people who keep it. In addition, its habits and characteristics are extremely similar to those of ordinary martens.
Lightning Marst has a moderate body size, a small head, and a slightly strong hind body. It can be clearly seen that its ears are slightly triangular and slightly inwardly inclined, with a pair of black eyes, and the nose is red. In addition, the hind body of the lightning marten is well developed, slightly rounded, and has a strong and powerful body, making it a good marten breed. The only difference between this marten and other martens is that it is attached to a lightning-like black stripe, which is quite distinctive.
Marshall marten, bred in the Marshall Farm in the United States since 1939, has a history of over 70 years. Today, Marshall has become the world's number one brand of pet martens. The gentle personality of its pet martens and the rich product line ensure a happy and healthy life for them.
The purebred pet martens with a higher level of domestication and a milder temperament can live up to 20 years in a healthy state.
Before appearing on the market, pet martens live on farms where they are fed with a mixture of fish and chicken instead of commercial pet food. This marten food provides the necessary protein and fat for the growth of pet martens. However, problems also arise from this, as the marten food on farms cannot be strictly controlled in terms of hygiene due to the large quantity used.
1. Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a symptom that can be caused by many reasons. Common causes include physical irritation, bacterial infection, and viral infection.
Eating nuts or swallowing indigestible foreign objects can cause diarrhea. It is common to have diarrhea with stool resembling nasal mucus, sometimes mixed with blood streaks and undigested foreign objects. Easily changing the diet or adding other feeds may also cause diarrhea.
Diarrhea caused by bacterial infections is often due to eating spoiled mink food and unclean drinking water. It is common to have very loose and unformed bowel movements, a depressed mood in the sick mink, and a decrease in food intake.
Stress reactions can also easily cause diarrhea, especially for pet minks that have been transported for a long distance to a pet store within one or two days. In this case, no treatment is needed as it will recover on its own.
2. Coughing and Sneezing
Generally, coughing is transient and does not require treatment. It can be observed. If persistent coughing occurs, it is necessary to determine whether there is a foreign object stuck in the throat, and coughing may also occur during the shedding period. If several minks are placed in the same space when shedding, coughing or sneezing may be observed when customers receive the minks due to mutual hair stimulation. Generally, no treatment is needed as it can self-heal.
Coughing can also occur during a cold and requires appropriate treatment.
Treatment options include injection with Gentamicin, 0.3ml/kg intramuscularly, twice a day. The remaining injection solution can be stored in a washed penicillin bottle. Cephalosporin antibiotics commonly used in pet hospitals can also be used. For severe diarrhea, the mink needs to be fed with glucose saline water, using a syringe to feed from the corner of the mouth to inside. For severe weakness, Dexamethasone can be injected subcutaneously, 0.3ml/kg. Nutritional paste helps with later recovery and recuperation.
Diarrhea caused by viral infections is more severe and will be explained separately.
Try not to change feed ingredients arbitrarily and use designated food.
3. Eye Diseases
The main symptoms of eye diseases include cloudy eyes, excessive secretion adhering to eyelids, eyelid swelling, and pus formation in the upper and lower eyelids.
Cloudy eyes occur in older minks and become cloudy due to aging, and eye trauma can also cause cloudy eyes. Treating eye trauma in minks can be accomplished by using eye drops and generally can be cured.
Excessive secretion adhering to eyelids and eyelid swelling are generally caused by bacterial infections, and treatment with Hydrocortisone eye drops can easily alleviate the symptoms.
Pus formation in the eyelids is mostly caused by trauma. The treatment method is to make a small incision on the pus, squeeze out the pus, sprinkle with anti-inflammatory powder, and receive antibiotic injection treatment for 3-5 days to cure it.
Fever and canine distemper can also cause the secretion of purulent eye discharge, which requires targeted treatment.
Entropion is a rare abnormal growth condition where the eyelids of the mink are partially loose, the edge of the eyelid is turned in the direction of the eyeball, causing constant irritation to the eyeball, and the eyes continuously produce tears and mucus, resulting in eyelid adhesion. If this condition occurs before delivery, it will be resolved in the venue and generally will not affect customers.
Cataracts can also occur in older minks. The manifestation is white eyes, which is visually apparent.
Treatment options: For simple cloudy eyes, excessive tears, and excessive eye discharge, use a degreased cotton swab dipped in saline to wipe the eyes and the surrounding area, and then instill 2-3 drops of eye drops, 2-3 times a day.
Living environment
Generally speaking, martens can live for about 13 years. If they are properly raised, they may live even longer. The lightning marst is no exception. It is a lively and active pet marten. Therefore, before raising it, the owner should prepare a suitable cage, where it can be raised together with other marten species, so that they will grow up healthier and happier. It should be noted that the owner should not confine it in the marten box for a long time. It should be allowed to play outside frequently and receive more fresh air. If it is not convenient to let it roam outside, the owner can also buy some special toys for martens to keep it entertained during boring times.
Food characteristics
The main food for the lightning marst is the specialized feed for pet martens. If conditions are limited, cat food or dog food can be used as a substitute. It should be noted that regardless of the type of marten being raised, its food must contain over thirty percent protein and three percent fiber. The lightning marst is no exception. It is important to know that unlike other animals, their food should not include fruits or vegetables, and pet martens are also very picky when it comes to meat. The owner should pay attention to this when feeding them.
