It is recommended for pet lovers to keep it. The most distinctive feature of Angora is curiosity and openness, and they like to play with people. Because of their endless curiosity and adventurous spirit, they are never idle. They often climb into the furniture or go underneath to explore new things. They gather anything they like and hide them in hidden places. They also establish their own activity range. They are playful, intelligent and easy to get along with. They often want to play with their owners. They especially like to go in and out with people, so they can be put on a leash or placed in a cage for a walk, just like dogs.
Angora is a social animal. Although they like to be close to people, they prefer to play with their own kind. As long as the space is sufficient, keeping multiple ferrets together is not a big problem. If they are kept alone for a long time without feeling lonely or if their activities are reduced, leading to insufficient exercise, they will feel stressed and become overweight, or even get sick. Therefore, don't keep them in a cage all the time, and let them come out and play frequently. Because of their lively and active personality, there are also various ferret-specific toys available on the market to keep them entertained.
1. Canine Distemper
Ferrets are highly susceptible to infection and are experimental animals for canine distemper virus (CDV). It can be transmitted through various means.
There are four common symptoms of distemper:
⑴. Respiratory type: characterized by dry nose, cracking, purulent nasal discharge, occasional scratching of the nose, purulent discharge from the eyes, severe cases may have eyelid adhesions, sometimes coughing, dry cough.
⑵. Gastrointestinal type: decreased appetite, vomiting, dehydration and emaciation, excretion of loose stools or bloody stools with mucus.
⑶. Neurological type: sudden seizures in affected ferrets, resembling epilepsy (epizootic catarrhal neurosis), foaming at the mouth, limb paddling, lasting for a few minutes to more than ten minutes, then becoming conscious, standing, and appearing disoriented.
⑷. Dermatological type: keratinization and thickening of paw pads, hardening of paw pads, sometimes cracking.
Prevention and treatment:
Inject CDV vaccine on time and avoid contact with dogs and cats infected with distemper.
If distemper symptoms occur, promptly test using a reagent kit. If confirmed with distemper infection, promptly inject canine distemper high titer serum. Due to their small size and narrow blood vessels, it is more difficult to administer intravenous fluids to ferrets. If dehydration occurs, subcutaneously inject 5-10ml of saline on both sides of the abdomen until the dehydration symptoms disappear. If diarrhea occurs, it is necessary to concurrently administer antibiotics (such as enrofloxacin, cefotiam hydrochloride, or penicillin-streptomycin combined preparation, as instructed), and vitamin C for treating complications.
If severe dehydration, difficulty breathing, frequent and persistent seizures, deterioration of the condition occur, it is generally difficult to cure.
2. Aleutian Disease Virus Infection
Caused by Aleutian disease virus, it is most easily infects canids and mustelids, showing symptoms of enteritis syndrome and myocarditis syndrome.
This disease is more common in winter and spring. Improper feeding or abrupt temperature changes can also cause the disease to develop. The disease is mainly transmitted through the digestive tract.
Symptoms: ⑴. Enteritis type: initial loss of appetite, rapidly progresses to frequent vomiting and severe diarrhea, excreting foul-smelling soy sauce-like or tomato juice-like bloody stools (caused by intestinal bleeding lesions), followed by sunken eyeballs, loss of skin elasticity, rough fur, and dehydration symptoms. The ferret's body temperature drops, ears and nose become cool, they appear depressed, until shock and death occur.
⑵. Myocarditis type: rare, mostly seen at the beginning of an outbreak or after the recovery from enteritis type. Symptoms include groaning, dry cough, cyanosis of the mucous membranes, extreme difficulty in breathing, increased heart rate, and often death within a few hours.
Prevention and treatment: This disease primarily relies on immunization for prevention and preventing infection. Because the disease worsens rapidly after infection, many animals die before treatment can be administered, so vaccination should be implemented, and CPV fire extinguishing vaccine should be regularly administered to avoid contact with diseased dogs and cats.
In the early stage, injections of canine parvovirus monoclonal antibodies or canine parvovirus antiserum can be administered, oral sugar-salt solution (to increase strength); hemostatic agents, vitamin K1, vitamin K3 (to stop bleeding); Gastric complex tablets, Huoxiang Zhengqi water (to stop vomiting); Qingdaomycin, kanamycin, and sulfonamide drugs can be used for symptomatic treatment.
First,
1. Immunization
Mainly immunize against distemper, parvovirus, and rabies.
It is recommended to vaccinate with INTERVAC for distemper and parvovirus, one dose per ferret, once a year, and with MERIAL or RABIKON for rabies, one dose per ferret, once a year.
2. Health care:
1. You know your pet and its daily routine the best. If you notice any inexplicable behavior or sudden changes in temperament, take them to the doctor for a physical examination.
2. It is recommended to closely observe their food, especially when multiple ferrets eat together. Each ferret should eat enough. Loss of appetite is often the initial symptom of many diseases.
3. If your ferret shows symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, nasal bleeding, lumps, or physical weakness, please contact your veterinarian immediately for timely treatment.
4. Prescription medication prescribed by the doctor must be given to them on time and in the correct dosage. It may be an unhappy experience for you and your ferret, but it is good for them.
3. Precautions:
When symptoms are ambiguous, it is best to go to a pet hospital for a check-up. After all, a professional doctor is much better than abstract descriptions, which also guarantees the health of your ferret baby.
