In Malta, the Pharaoh Hound has become adept at hunting rabbits, earning it the nickname 'rabbit dog'. In 1979, the Maltese government declared this breed as the national animal and issued commemorative silver coins engraved with its portrait.
The Pharaoh Hound has a prominent feature, which is its beautiful amber eyes. When happy or excited, its nose and ears turn deep rose, giving it an elegant and powerful overall appearance. Its movements are smooth, flexible, and effortless, yet speedy. Its alert expression, excellent hunting skills, good vision and sense of smell, as well as its understanding and connection with humans, make it an outstanding hunting dog and a valuable treasure in the process of human understanding and research of canine history.
Intelligent, lively, friendly, affectionate, mischievous and alert, very loyal, with sharp senses, excellent vision and sense of smell, it is an excellent hunting dog. It particularly enjoys the company of children, likes to play and frolic, and looks forward to attracting human attention.
The Pharaoh Hound originates from Egypt and is one of the oldest dog breeds. It has a striking resemblance to the breeds depicted in ancient Egyptian paintings from 4000 years ago. Details related to them can even be found in ancient Egyptian literature and hieroglyphs. They were once favored pets of the pharaohs of ancient Egypt.
In the 14th century BC, King Tutankhamen of Egypt had a special fondness for a Pharaoh Hound. After the dog's death, he ordered it to be wrapped in fine linen, anointed with perfume, and placed in a coffin to receive glory in the presence of the gods. This reflects the esteemed status of the Pharaoh Hound at that time. Later, Phoenician merchants brought the Pharaoh Hound to the island of Malta. Although it underwent more than 2000 years of breeding and improvement, the breed still retains its primitive characteristics and the appearance of its Egyptian ancestors. In Malta, the Pharaoh Hound has become adept at hunting rabbits, earning it the nickname "rabbit dog".
Based on the preserved animal skeletons, hunting dogs similar to the Pharaoh Hound lived in the Middle East for at least 5000 years. After the Roman invasion of Egypt 2000 years ago, similar dogs spread to other regions around the Mediterranean. The breed may have been brought by Phoenician and Carthaginian traders and was only discovered by breeders in the 1960s. At that time, the Pharaoh Hound had already become the most common breed among the descendants of the "Egyptian hunting dog". Unlike the sight hounds that rely solely on vision for hunting, the Pharaoh Hound can hunt using its vision, hearing, and sense of smell.
It was introduced to England in 1968 and officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1983.
The Pharaoh Hound is intelligent, friendly, affectionate, playful, and alert. It is very loyal and sharp, with good vision and sense of smell, making it an excellent hunting dog.
This dog belongs to a large hunting breed and requires sufficient exercise and space, so it is not suitable for city living.
However, it does not require frequent grooming and is suitable for hot weather. It particularly loves children and can be a family dog.

The Pharaoh Hound, although able to adapt to hot weather, still requires attention from its owner to prevent heatstroke in summer. Water is an essential nutrient for dogs, and 20% water deficiency can be life-threatening. Therefore, water should be supplied to dogs around the clock, and the water should be replaced promptly every day to maintain its cleanliness. After exercising in high temperatures, dogs need to drink a large amount of water to cool down and quench their thirst. At this time, owners must feed them cool water, but should not feed them ice water directly to avoid stomach irritation. When taking the dog out, it is best to choose early morning or evening and try to let them play in shady areas. The maintenance of the Pharaoh Hound's teeth is similar to that of humans. Dental caries can have adverse effects on the digestive system, excretory system, and the dog's health. When dental plaque or leftover food accumulates in the gaps between teeth, it can cause bacteria to grow in the oral cavity. In order to effectively prevent dental diseases and avoid dental plaque, it is necessary to feed the dog a reasonable diet, avoid feeding too many soft or wet foods, let the dog chew on bones when there is nothing to do, or give the dog some specially made "dog toy food".
Check the puppy's teeth and gums once a week to ensure that there are no symptoms of infectious diseases on the gums, and remove the plaque from the puppy's teeth. Clean the puppy's teeth with a gentle-bristled toothbrush dipped in saltwater or animal toothpaste.
1. Do not bathe frequently
When bathing a dog, it should not be done too frequently. The frequency of bathing a dog depends on its hygiene condition. In hot weather, it can be bathed one or two times more, while in winter, it can be reduced by one or two times. However, the total number of baths should not exceed 5 times. Otherwise, it will damage its fur and skin!
2. Brush regularly
Dogs shed almost every day, especially in spring and autumn. If you want the fur to grow well, regular brushing is an important step. Pet owners can use special brushes for pets to help dogs clean the naturally shed fur and prevent tangling. Brushing once in the morning and once in the evening for about five minutes each time is sufficient.
3. Sunbathe
Sunbathing is beneficial for the growth of a dog's fur. In addition to making the fur more shiny, letting the dog sunbathe can also help kill bacteria. While sunbathing, pet owners can let the dog exercise a bit, which can improve the dog's physical fitness, promote blood circulation, and help grow healthier fur.
4. Deworming
Poor fur condition is closely related to parasites. Parasites absorb a large amount of nutrients from the dog's body, which leads to nutrient deprivation. Therefore, deworming is essential. It is recommended to do both internal and external deworming. Also, deworming medicine can cause great harm to the dog's gastrointestinal tract, so it is advisable to feed probiotics to relieve gastrointestinal discomfort.
5. Pay attention to diet
In order to have a shiny fur, it is necessary to establish a good nutritional foundation and pay attention to daily diet. On the one hand, feed the dog with nutritious and healthy dog food, choose a type of dog food that is suitable for the dog and provides sufficient nutrients to meet the dog's needs. On the other hand, you can feed the dog an appropriate amount of lean meat, cooked egg yolks, and vegetable oil.
