The Cornish Rex Cat, originally from Cornwall, England, is one type of the Cornish Rex Cat (also known as Rex Cat) which is divided into the Cornish Rex Cat and Devon Rex Cat. Generally, curly-haired cats are quite intelligent and can adapt to activities.
The Cornish Rex Cat is recognized as one of the indoor cats. Its curly hair is easy to care for and does not easily cause allergic reactions in owners.
It has unique curly fur, which is very short and close to the body, as well as a unique head shape and slender body. Although the limbs are slender, the muscles are developed, making it look very elegant and slim.
The Cornish Rex Cat breed originated from a farm in Bodmin, Cornwall, England on July 21, 1950. One of the kittens from a litter of a typical red and white farm cat had unique characteristics. Cats in the UK are usually heavier and more robust, but this little red tomcat had a slender body, a soft tail, huge ears, and a narrow head. Moreover, his tight curly coat was smooth as silk, with waves covering his body. Even his short whiskers were curled.
It is an ideal pet for both the elderly and children.
1, Feline Ringworm
Feline ringworm is a common skin disease in cats, which is simply fungal infection.
Cause: Cats with poor constitution are more prone to ringworm. Another reason is fungal infection due to warm and humid living environment.
Symptoms: The most common locations for ringworm are the ears and chin. In the early stage, small patches of ringworm appear, with hair loss and dry scales on the surface. In severe cases, there may be skin ulcers and large areas of baldness.
Solution: First isolate the infected cat – shave the hair (shaving the hair around the ringworm not only facilitates the application of medication, but also prevents the spread of fungus) – take oral medication (commonly used medications include itraconazole/fluconazole/griseofulvin) – apply medication cream (ketoconazole cream/miconazole cream/tolnaftate cream/pimaricin spray, remember to follow the doctor's advice) – medicated bath (ketoconazole solution/miconazole solution, maintain for 1 to 2 weeks until recovery) – increase nutrition (cats infected with ringworm often have some immune problems and need to increase nutrition; boil some chicken breast and carrots) – bask in the sun (sunbathing and maintaining ventilation can help kill fungus)
2, Feline Rhinotracheitis
Feline rhinotracheitis is also a common disease, and weak kittens are more susceptible to the disease.
Cause: A strain of bacteria called feline herpesvirus enters the cat's respiratory tract. This virus attaches to the cat's trachea and begins to invade their respiratory system.
Symptoms: Elevated body temperature, mucus around the nose, frequent sneezing, excessive secretion around the eyes, and severe cases may have conjunctivitis.
Solution: When the condition is not too severe in the early stage, it is recommended to take lysine and use antiviral eye drops. It is recommended to vaccinate kittens, which reduces the chance of getting feline rhinotracheitis. The virus that causes feline rhinotracheitis has strong viability, so it is necessary to do a thorough disinfection and cleaning of the entire house, which can be done with formaldehyde and phenol.
3, Vomiting
Vomiting in cats is also common. Sometimes, cats will vomit their own vomit as part of their body's protective mechanism, and they will usually feel better after vomiting.
Cause: Ingesting too much hair, indigestion, eating foreign objects, rapid change of food, feeling cold and catching a cold, or gastroenteritis can all cause vomiting in cats.
Symptoms: Hair and mucus in the vomit; or vomiting food, yellow water, and foam.
Solution: If the cat vomits hair, it is recommended to buy some hairball gel or cat grass for the cat to eat.
When the cat vomits, it is recommended to fast the cat for a day, give it warm water to drink, and then feed it some pet probiotics to regulate its intestinal flora. If the vomiting symptoms stop, you can feed it a small amount of soft cat food or canned food with more soup and easily digestible food. If the vomiting condition does not improve, it is recommended to seek medical attention.
Hygiene: Because cats have a lot of fur, they are prone to carrying various bacteria and fleas. For the health of both the cat and the owner, the cat should be bathed and groomed regularly;
Diet: Different cats have different preferences for food. Owners should not choose cat food at random for convenience. They should carefully select cat food based on the type, growth, and physical condition of the cat, and also prepare dedicated utensils for the cat;
Health: Like humans, cats can also get sick. When a cat gets sick, it should be taken to a specialized veterinary hospital for treatment. Regular physical examinations and vaccinations should also be carried out. Only when a cat is healthy can it have the energy to play with its owner;
Safety: There is a saying that "curiosity killed the cat." Cats are restless and always curious about various things. Moreover, their nature makes them particularly fond of entering enclosed spaces. Therefore, owners must close doors, windows, and lids to prevent cats from getting into potential danger;
Living environment: Cats love to lie down and take naps the most, so as an owner, you should prepare a small pad for it to sleep on. However, these pads can accumulate a lot of bacteria after prolonged use, so attention must be paid to regular cleaning and disinfection;
Cat litter: The problem of pets relieving themselves everywhere has troubled many pet owners. However, cats are actually very clean animals, so as long as the owner prepares cat litter for the cat, it will go to the litter box by itself;
Cats are not able to endure mistreatment. When the owner forces them to do something, they can become irritated. Therefore, owners should trim the cat's nails regularly to prevent scratches and infections during playtime.
Grooming time: Recommended every three days
1. Relax the cat: Before grooming, you can give the cat a massage service. When the kitten purrs, proceed with the following steps;
2. Brush along the hair: From the back→waist→hindquarters→tail; when combing, you can wet the cat's hair with a small amount of water to reduce static electricity. Comb along the direction of hair growth, from top to bottom;
3. Brush from the chest to the abdomen: Lift the cat and sit on your lap in a human position, and comb from top to bottom. The cat's belly is more sensitive, so the cat owner must be fast and accurate when grooming;
4. Brush the cat's head and face: You can comb from the cat's head or face towards the neck. Be careful with the cat's eyes when combing;
5. Hair under the armpits and on the belly side: At this time, the cat can lie on its side, lift the cat's front paws, and comb the side of the armpits to the abdomen;
6. Finally, use a comb to comb and remove excess hair, straighten the cat's coat, and finish the entire grooming process.
