American Wirehair Cat are only allowed to have American Shorthair cats in their bloodline when recognized as a purebred cat. Due to long-term breeding with American Shorthair cats, whether in body shape or coat color, they are the same as American Shorthair cats, and their relationship is like siblings. The biggest feature is that each guard hair is hooked or curled at the end, even the whiskers and hair inside the ears are the same.

When they are born, their hair is tightly curled, and it grows into adult curly hair after four or five months. From the top hair to the undercoat, they all have elastic and hard hair, like long iron brushes. The coat is actually thinner than that of ordinary cats, but it appears fluffy and thick due to the curls, forming large waves or even curls of hair, which looks like a little lamb. The texture of the hair is coarse and rough, like a metal wire, completely different from curly-haired cats that have a soft texture.

The hair on the cheeks and abdomen is not as rough. The coat colors are as diverse as those of American Shorthair cats, such as solid colors like white and black, patterned forms, and tabby colors. All coat colors and patterns have been recognized except for pointed colors. Among them, tabby cats are more popular because the hard hair makes the tabby pattern more prominent, with a beautiful "collar" pattern on the neck and a striped pattern on the body called "fishbone" because it resembles vertebrae.
