The Havana cat has a slender and agile body; its limbs are long, with slightly shorter front legs than hind legs; its paws are small and oval-shaped; its head is wedge-shaped, with a short and straight nose, almond-shaped eyes, drooping eyes, and green in color; its ears are large, slightly forward-leaning, and slightly round at the front end; its tail is of medium length and tapered. The fur is very short and glossy, with a uniform chestnut brown color.
The Havana cat was bred by British livestock scientists in the early 1950s. It is a hybrid breed of a chocolate Siamese cat and a British shorthair cat. Because its fur, whiskers, and nose are all brown, the same color as the famous Havana cigars in Cuba, it is named Havana cat, meaning cigar-colored cat.
The Havana cat has been famous for several centuries, and many people believe that a fully brown cat can protect its owners from misfortune. The birthplace of the Havana cat may be in Southeast Asia, and it came to Britain as a branch of the Siamese cat in the 19th century. In 1894, MasterTimkeyBrown made its first appearance at the cat show, described as "a Siamese cat with a smooth tan coat and blue-green eyes".
In 1930, the Havana cat became a fully brown breed. In order to make this cat have a more intense, warm reddish-brown color on the basis of brown, British breeders conducted various combination experiments. They crossed a Siamese cat with a chocolate color gene and chocolate color patches on its body with a British black shorthair female cat, and obtained offspring with changed colors. After 1953, it was further crossed with Russian blue cats, Siamese cats, and other breeds, and finally bred the Havana brown cat we see today.
