Universal Terrier, originating in the Airedale Valley of Yorkshire, is named after its place of origin. It is a crossbreed between an otterhound and an extinct black and tan terrier. Its main job is to hunt otters, bears, wolves, wild boars, and deer. It has a lively and friendly personality, is loyal to its owner, and enjoys swimming and being in the water. Although it can be stubborn at times, with strict training and care, it will be obedient and can become an excellent guard dog.
During the First World War, the Universal Terrier was first used by the British Army as a guard dog and messenger dog. They performed remarkably on the battlefield, and it is said that a Universal Terrier named Jack was awarded the Victoria Cross for his brave actions and sacrifice in battle.
From 1864, this breed of puppy was called the working terrier, waterside terrier, and Bingly terrier. During the early period of dog shows, which were not widely popular at the time, they increased in number due to their popularity at local agricultural shows. In later developments, the Universal Terrier with standard conditions continued to be refined and confirmed for its perfection. They received the best evaluations at all prestigious dog shows held in the UK and the US where they participated.
In 1879, the standard for the Universal Terrier was established for the first time at the Bingly Universal Terrier Agricultural Show in Yorkshire. Later, this standard was adopted by cities such as Skipton, Bradford, Keighley, and Otley. The Universal Terrier then won the championship in the competition for the Otley Gold Medal for the first time.
Champion Master Briar (1897-1906) is recognized as the elder in the pedigree of this breed. His sons, Ch. Clonmel Monarch and Crompton Marvel, exemplified his genetic dominance. Ch. Clonmel Monarch was exported to Philadelphia and was loved by enthusiasts there, promoting the development of the breed throughout the hemisphere.
The Universal Terrier has a strong personality and is not suitable for cohabitation with other animals. This is because it was used as a messenger dog during wars, and it is independent, brave, and decisive, making it difficult to integrate with other animals. Despite this, it is loyal and friendly to its owner, with abundant energy, and can be an excellent guard dog. Due to its brave nature and love for exercise, it requires sufficient daily physical activity and is not suitable for busy office workers to raise.

1.Universal Terriers should be fed at regular times, and the food bowl should be taken away when the time is up. This can create a conditioned reflex in the dog, secrete gastric juice, and promote appetite.
2.Adult dogs should be fed once in the morning and once in the evening. A little more can be fed at night because of the longer time interval. The younger the dog, the more frequent the feeding should be, and it should be fed small meals. For dogs under 1 year old, feed them 3 times a day; for dogs under 3 months old, feed them 4 times a day; for puppies under 2 months old, feed them 5 times a day. You can regularly change their food to prevent them from becoming picky eaters.
3.It is recommended to feed the Universal Terrier in the kennel and keep it at a fixed location. This can maintain a stable environment, as some dogs may have poor appetite after changing the feeding location.
4.Except in hot summers, feed the Universal Terrier food that is around 40°C in temperature. It should not be too cold or too hot, as it can harm the dog's stomach. Also, make sure the dog does not engage in intense exercise before or after feeding.
1、Do not bathe frequently
When bathing your dog, of course, it should not be too frequent. It depends on the hygiene of the dog. If the weather is hot in summer, you can bathe them one or two more times, and you can reduce it by one or two times in winter, but the total should not exceed 5 times. Otherwise, it will damage its fur and skin!
2、Brush their coat regularly
Dogs almost shed hair every day, especially in spring and autumn. Seasonal shedding is more severe. To make the fur grow well, regular brushing is an important step. Pet owners can use a special brush for pets to help dogs clear naturally shed hair and avoid tangles. Brushing once in the morning and evening for about five minutes each time is enough.
3、Sunbathing
Sunbathing is beneficial to the growth of the dog's fur. In addition to making the fur more shiny, letting the dog sunbathe can also help kill bacteria. At the same time, pet owners can let the dog exercise, which can help improve the dog's physical fitness, promote blood circulation, and help grow healthier fur.
4、Deworming
Poor fur condition is also closely related to parasites. Parasites will absorb a large amount of nutrients from the dog's body and snatch them, so deworming is indispensable. It is recommended to do both internal and external deworming. Deworming medicine can cause great harm to the dog's stomach, so it is recommended to feed the dog with probiotics regularly to relieve gastrointestinal discomfort.
5、Pay attention to diet
In order for the dog to have a beautiful coat, it must have a good nutritional foundation and pay attention to daily diet. On the one hand, feed the dog with nutritious and healthy dog food, choose a suitable and nutritionally adequate dog food that meets the dog's needs; on the other hand, you can give the dog a moderate amount of lean meat, cooked egg yolk, and vegetable oil, etc.
