Sichuan East Hunting Dog, also known as Linshui Dog or Chongqing Dog, is a fierce Chinese breed and a rare breed worldwide. It is only found in Linshui County, Dazu County, Hechuan County, Guangan County in the eastern part of Sichuan Province and the suburbs of Chongqing City, hence the name Sichuan East Hunting Dog.
It is a native breed that has evolved through natural reproduction in the unique geographical environment of southwest China. Not only does it have a long history, but it also has distinct regional cultural characteristics. The folk method of breeding Sichuan East Hunting Dog has a saying: head resembles a state, back resembles a shrimp, legs resemble a bent bow, ears resemble a forked sheep, mouth resembles a coffin, tail resembles a bamboo shoot, eyes resemble copper bells, and gives a feeling of flowers in the mouth.
Due to its agility, keen senses, strong hunting desire, ferocious temperament, and appropriate biting ability, it was once trained and used as a fighting dog by a few people.
The Sichuan East Hunting Dog is outgoing, alert, intelligent, and fiercely determined. It is not restrained, but it is extremely obedient and loyal to its owner. It does not back down against external threats and protecting its territory is its most outstanding instinct.
The origin of Sichuan East Hunting Dog can be traced back to the Han Dynasty, with a history of over two thousand years. On April 20, 2000, many terracotta figures with a similar size to the dog were discovered in the Western Han Dynasty tomb in Jiangbei District, Chongqing. The guardian deity on the tomb door also appeared in the form of the dog. It can be seen that as early as more than 2,000 years ago, the East Sichuan Dog was very popular.
In the early days, the dog was mostly raised by local wealthy families, symbolizing their status and position. Due to its fierce and agile nature, as well as its strong fighting ability, hunters discovered its unique hunting talent during hunting activities and widely used it. During the period of the Republic of China, only a few warlords and wealthy nobles used it for hunting and guarding the house.
Before the liberation, it was mainly used to guard the yard of wealthy families and for hunting. In the early 1990s, enthusiasts of this dog, Zhou Guang, Li Changli, Jiang Shengming, and others, went to its place of origin for a large number of studies, thus confirming this breed. However, at that time, this breed did not have a fixed and standardized name, even the local people were confused about what breed it belonged to. In order to develop China's dog breed resources, Mr. Zhou Guang scientifically and concisely named it Sichuan East Hunting Dog based on its place of origin and its main functions. It was prominently recommended in the second issue of "China Dog Breeding" magazine in 1994.
After Chongqing was designated as a municipality directly under the central government, the term "Chongqing" became more widely used. In addition, the dog has four major functions: hunting, fighting, appreciation, and guarding the house, making it an all-round dog. It is unique to Chongqing. In order to let more people recognize and understand this ancient and precious breed, in April 2000, after research and decision by the Chongqing Pet Association, it was officially renamed as "Chongqing Dog".
Due to various reasons, the number of dogs declined sharply in the 1960s and did not receive protection until the 1970s. It was not until then that breeding efforts were intensified and the number gradually recovered.
Sichuan East Hunting Dog is outgoing and alert, brave and confident, straightforward and loyal. It has a certain level of aggression, but it is very obedient and loyal to its owner. It has a strong hostility towards strangers and a strong sense of territorial protection. It is very suitable as a guard dog and watchdog.
This breed is fierce, intelligent and clever, with a keen sense of smell, good endurance, fast running speed, and high hunting success rate. In dogfighting arenas, they are very agile, brave and good at fighting. They often bite the opponent's fatal parts. If the fight does not stop, "when two tigers fight, there will be one death." They are famous for their four main purposes: hunting, dogfighting, ornamental purposes, and guarding homes and yards.
1. Heart disease
Dogs are more likely to get heart disease due to obesity and old age. When dogs have heart disease, they often show symptoms such as easy fatigue and difficulty breathing. Heart disease in dogs is difficult to detect, and often by the time the owner notices, it is already in a very advanced stage.
2. Infectious diseases
Canine distemper and canine parvovirus are common and highly fatal infectious diseases for dogs. Dogs that have not been vaccinated in a timely manner are susceptible to these two infectious diseases. Once infected, dogs may show symptoms such as listlessness, decreased appetite, fever, and vomiting and diarrhea.
3. Kidney disease
When it comes to common diseases and symptoms in dogs, kidney disease cannot be overlooked. The terrifying aspect of kidney disease in dogs is that it often goes unnoticed until it has already progressed to the point where more than 75% of the kidney cells are damaged. When dogs have kidney problems, the typical symptoms include blood in the urine, abnormal urine color, and changes in urination habits.
4. Parasites
Gastrointestinal worms such as roundworms and hookworms, as well as heartworms, are common parasites that infect dogs. When dogs are infected with gastrointestinal worms, the main symptoms include weight loss, lethargy, diarrhea, presence of worms in the feces, and pale gums. On the other hand, heartworms are parasites that reside in the dog's heart. Dogs infected with heartworms may experience symptoms such as decreased vitality, coughing, anemia, shortness of breath, and abdominal fluid.
5. Canine pneumonia
Pneumonia is also a common disease in dogs, but it is often a complication of other diseases. It commonly occurs in dogs with abnormalities in the upper respiratory tract, bacterial infections, canine distemper, viral influenza, impaired lung function, and heartworm infection. The main symptoms of canine pneumonia include coughing, nasal discharge, and high body temperature.
Sichuan East Hunting Dog puppies need to be trained every day once they reach the appropriate age. This not only helps to stimulate their potential, but also helps them integrate better into human life.
This breed has a fierce temperament and some aggression, so owners need to train them well and may need to keep them on a leash when necessary.
1. Do not bathe frequently p>
When bathing a dog, of course, it cannot be too frequent. It depends on the hygiene of the dog. If the weather is hot in summer, bathe it one or two more times, and reduce it one or two times in winter. But generally, it should not exceed 5 times. Otherwise, it will damage its fur and skin!
2. Brush the fur diligently p>
Dogs shed almost every day, especially in spring and autumn, when seasonal shedding is more severe. To make the fur grow well, brushing the fur diligently is an important step. Pet owners can use pet-specific brushes to help dogs remove naturally shed hair and prevent tangling. Brushing once in the morning and once in the evening for about five minutes each time is enough.
3. Get some sunlight p>
Sunbathing is beneficial for the growth of a dog's fur. Besides making the fur more shiny, letting the dog bask in the sun can also help sterilize. While sunbathing, owners can let the dog exercise a bit, which can improve the dog's physical fitness, promote blood circulation, and help grow healthier fur.
4. Parasite control p>
Poor fur quality is closely related to parasites. Parasites will absorb a large amount of nutrients from the dog's body and rob nutrition, so parasite control is essential. When deworming, it is recommended to do internal and external treatments together. Deworming medications can cause significant damage to the dog's gastrointestinal system, so it is recommended to feed probiotics regularly to alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort.
5. Pay attention to diet p>
In order for dogs to have beautiful and shiny fur, it is necessary to lay a solid foundation of nutrition and pay attention to daily diet. On the one hand, feed the dog nutritious and healthy dog food, choose a brand that is suitable for the dog and has sufficient nutrients to meet the dog's needs. On the other hand, you can also feed the dog a moderate amount of lean meat, cooked egg yolks, and vegetable oil.
