Chow Chow is an ancient breed of dog originating from Tibet, China. According to reliable historical records, it can be traced back to the earliest periods in Guangdong and Guangzhou during the Xia and Shang dynasties. In the local area, it is considered to be native and is commonly known as "Wuli", "Hei She" or "Hei Zui" dog. In the northern region, it is often referred to as a wolf dog, black bear dog, or more complexly as black tongue or Guangdong dog, or even "Nansong Shi", "Guangsong Shi", etc. According to records, for a long period of time in the past, it was mainly used as a hunting dog because of its keen senses, loyalty to its owner, and intelligence. Therefore, hunters primarily used it to hunt Mongolian chickens and Yunnan partridges. Its working abilities were highly regarded by people. Nowadays, it also has a high reputation and is considered a fashionable pet symbol.
Chow Chows can also be seen in some artifacts from the Han Dynasty. Due to its long history, some art and documents have not been well preserved, and the remaining information makes it difficult to determine the ancestors of Chow Chows with certainty. Not long ago, a relief dating back to the Han Dynasty, around 150 BC, was discovered. It records that during that era, Chow Chows were a type of hunting dog. Therefore, this breed has a history of at least 2000 years. However, some scholars believe that its history may be even longer.
In 1903, the AKC officially recognized Chow Chows as a separate breed. In 1906, the Chow Chow Club of America was formally established and became one of the member clubs of the AKC.
The Chow Chow is difficult to raise and is suitable for dog lovers who are very patient and have a special understanding of the Chow Chow. Because the Chow Chow has a lot of hair and sebum, it is difficult to dissipate heat. If it cannot maintain a low temperature air conditioning for 24 hours in summer, it may suffer from heat stroke. In addition, because the Chow Chow has very thick fur, with two to three layers, it is not easy to clean when bathing and has a strong odor.
